In 2010, I founded Common Good with a clear vision: to create safe, refillable products that I was comfortable using around my kids and pets. After a trip home to Australia, I was reminded that refilling laundry bottles was the norm. I returned to NY determined to combat the wastefulness of single-use plastics by creating a line of refillable household soaps and cleaning products.
As a mother, I needed to know that the ingredients we used were non-toxic and safe for my family. When I started looking at what was in the so-called green products we were using, I was alarmed by the skin-irritating and hormone-disrupting chemicals I found in many of the so-called natural products I was buying. I worked with a chemist to create formulations that not only worked but complied with chemical regulations in the strictest markets in the world. With my background as a stylist, I also wanted these products to be as beautiful as they were safe.
We started out of my Brooklyn home, and thanks to support from people like you, we’ve grown to be a trusted global brand. We pioneered the modern refill movement and continue to evolve our mission to eliminate plastic entirely from all our products.

Hand soap works by breaking down oils, dirt, and germs so they can be rinsed away with water. The secret lies in surfactants—a special type of ingredient that acts like a bridge between water and grease.
Here’s how it works: one end of a surfactant molecule loves water (hydrophilic) while the other end loves oil and dirt (hydrophobic). When you lather up, the hydrophobic end grabs onto the grime on your skin, while the hydrophilic end clings to water. This allows the dirt and oils to be surrounded, lifted away, and suspended in water so they can easily rinse off your hands.
